THE WA Government has named Chinese-backed Kimberley Agricultural Investment (KAI) and sandalwood producer Tropical Forestry Services (TFS) as the two preferred proponents for two parcels of Ord land, the Ord-West Bank and Mantinea.

This will make up one part of the Ord-East Kimberley expansion project, which will see irrigated agriculture expand throughout the valley.
Regional Development Minister Terry Redman said the successful development of the Ord West Bank and Mantinea land was another major step in unleashing the region's potential.
"The Ord-East Kimberley expansion project is one of the most significant and exciting investments made in agriculture in this State's history, and I look forward to seeing the Ord further evolve into a world-class agricultural precinct," Mr Redman said.
"The land release will increase the size of the Ord irrigation scheme area to 35,000 hectares and will further contribute to sustainable performance of the Ord region.
"This is another example of Royalties for Regions investment helping to build vibrant regions with strong economies."
Mr Redman said cabinet has approved a variation to the Ord Development Agreement which enables KAI to have a freehold tenure option for the land it develops as part of the Knox Plain Ord Irrigation area.
"The option will be available after the full development and cropping of this parcel of land and will be subject to all other provisions of the Ord development being met," he said.
"The State Government is committed to working with Kimberley Agricultural Investment, as well as local businesses and traditional owners, to deliver a world class agricultural precinct.
"The Ord-East Kimberley Expansion project is one of the most significant investments made in agriculture in this State's history."
Mr Redman acknowledged the continuing support of the Miriuwung Gajerrong people, whose consent to surrender native title lands under the Ord Final Agreement made the project possible.
The release of Ord West Bank and Mantinea lands is consistent with the intent of the Ord Final Native Title Agreement and follows previous successful land releases of Packsaddle, Goomig and Knox Plain lands.
The Ord-East Kimberley expansion is a $517 million project, with $322.5m invested through the Royalties for Regions program.
